Biennial Teacher Workload Survey
The Institute worked in partnership with CFE Research LtdLink opens in a new window to deliver a new biennial survey of the workload of teachers in England for the Department for Education. The IER collaborated with CFE and the DfE on the design of the survey questionnaire and worked on the analysis of the survey data.
Fieldwork for the survey took place in March 2016. A sratified sample of schools in the maintained sector across England was drawn, in which all teachers were invited to complete the survey on-line. The design of the questionnaire for the survey draws upon questionnaires from previous Teacher Workload Surveys (the most recent of which was undertaken in 2013), but was also intended to be consistent with the internationally-comparable TALIS (the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey) survey. This is conducted every 5 years, with the next being undertaken in 2018. Response to the survey was quite good, with 3.2 thousand valid responses obtained.
The findings of the project were published by the Department for Education on February 24th, 2017.
