Forest conservation policies must safeguard indigenous peoples’ rights, researchers urge

Global policy commitments on conservation such as the recent COP 26 declaration on Forest and Land Use are a step in the right direction but policy-makers must be inclusive of indigenous peoples and ensure that any initiatives learn from the long and problematic history of forest conservation, argues an international consortium of indigenous scholar activists and social, cultural, environmental, and behavioural scientists in correspondence published today [13] in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.

New city climate change commission to drive forward low carbon targets

Senior leaders from organisations across Coventry met today to help shape and move forward actions to reduce the impact of climate change.  

A new Coventry Climate Change Board will meet regularly to share policies, plans, good practice and work together collaboratively in an effort to keep the city on track for a zero carbon future. The Board is chaired by Margot James, the former minister for culture, communications and creative industries and Executive Chair for the Warwickshire Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick.

Coventry schools to build future cities from recycled household items

TeenTech City of Tomorrow will see Coventry school children make a city of recyclable household items, with help from researchers at WMG, University of Warwick who will teach them all about sustainability. A select few ideas – buildings and technology- will then be exhibited at the Coventry Transport Museum.


CO2 consuming concrete technology showcased at COP26 to be tested at University of Warwick

Technology developed by Concrete4Change that can make concrete a carbon sink rather than carbon producer will be trialled and tested by researchers from the University of Warwick. The technology which could revolutionise the concrete industry on a global scale, has been showcased and won an award at COP26.


Wheely good start for University of Warwick sustainable transport strategy

Staff, students and visitors at the University of Warwick have embraced the new West Midlands Cycle Hire scheme, with more than half of the university’s base stations consistently in the top ten across the whole West Midlands region by trips made. The campus e-scooter trial has also proved popular with almost 50,000 rides being taken since the scheme’s launch. These two-wheel transport schemes are part of the University’s commitment to encouraging staff, students and visitors to swop car journeys for more sustainable modes of transport such as cycling and public transport

COP26 - Did student negotiators best the politicians?

As world leaders threw coins for luck at the closing of the G20 summit in Rome last weekend, delegates at the University of Warwick held their breath for the results of a weekend of tense negotiations at the 2021 Warwick Climate Negotiating Forum (WNCF). Organised by and for students, the WCNF saw fifty attendees step into the shoes of delegates from 18 nations to hold their own global climate negotiations, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of climate campaigners.

The University of Warwick and Cranfield University join forces to bring sustainability simulation game to COP26

On 1st November, the University of Warwick and Cranfield University will come together to host the Exploring Sustainable Futures Game at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). The game is an innovative, role-playing, learning experience designed to engage participants in systematic and long-term thinking that will help them consider alternate methods to achieving a sustainable future by 2050.

University of Warwick announces expert delegation to attend COP26

The University of Warwick has announced its delegation of 17 attending the global climate conference, COP26, in Glasgow in November. The university is one of a limited number of institutions to have been granted official observer status by the UN-led conference, which is being hosted by the UK.
