Mental Health and Wellbeing Among Higher Education Staff: A Participatory Desk Review - Prof Nicole Tang

Within Warwick, there are groups of researchers spread across different departments researching mental health topics with various student populations. Through initial mapping exercises, we have identified representatives from Psychology (Jag Jutley-Neilson; Julie Eyden; Nicole Tang), IALT (Elena Riva; Tania Villanueva-Cabello) and Medical School (Carla Toro) to set up a Warwick Mental Health and Wellbeing in Higher Education Research Network. This network aims to encourage interdisciplinary research, engage students and staff in research, create resources for educating about and promoting MH&W in HE, as well as to enable development of research/pedagogical funding bids.

First, to build a track record (and platform) of collaboration, members of the network has worked together on a participatory desk review, preceded by a stakeholder’s consultation and two participatory workshops for the interpretation of findings. The project outcome is a co-production between the research team and our stakeholders/research partners.

Between June (notification of award) and end of July 2025 (end of funding period), we have:

1. Completed a desk review on HE staff mental health and wellbeing (post-covid). Manuscript in preparation, aiming for submission in by end of Nov 2025

2. Organised 3 engagement events, to involve relevant stakeholders on and off campus

Nicole Tang is leading an EPSRC hub application based on the mental health and wellbeing work linked to this project. We have established new collaborations with colleagues in Maths, Computer Sciences, Psychology and WMS (Digital, Behaviour and Sustainability Spotlights).
