Lesson-in-a-box
Introduction
In 2025 a group of our students (Hols, Amelia, Lily, Kim, Madison and Savannah) developed a Lesson-in-a-Box resource for schools involving the excavation of artefacts (3D printed copies of real artefacts from Lunt Roman Fort in Coventry and other objects) from boxes which can be taken into the classroom. This was developed as part of our module Public Engagement in Classics.
The Lesson-in-a-Box was designed as a practical workshop/session for local schools, run by the students themselves. In the classroom, replica artefacts - coins, dice, oil lamps, and 3D prints of artefacts from Lunt Roman Fort - can be 'excavated' by pupils from our special sand boxes, giving pupils a real life experience of excavation and discovery. Pupils can then decide what these artefcts are and who they might have belonged to and can respond creatively. The workshops also include information on Roman Britain and Lunt Fort provided by our students.
For those unable to access the boxes in person, the students also designed resources for schools to create a virtual equivalent, as well as resources for a lesson based on ancient Greek myths and monsters.
If you are a local Coventry/Warwickshire school interested in trying out one of these student-led workshops visiting your school, please contact Dr Paul Grigsby at Paul.grigsby@wrawick.ac.uk. There is limited avaialability, but we are always keen to run these sessions, so do get in touch
