IER Welcomes New Director

In August, Professor Chris Warhurst was appointed the new Director of IER. Chris joins IER from Australia, where he was Professor of Work and Organisational Studies at the Sydney University Business School. Chris is an internationally recognised expert in services work, job quality and skills. He described the institute as “one of the jewels in Warwick’s crown”, adding: “For more than 30 years it has been a leading research provider in its field, providing benchmark data for academics and influencing government policy.This is an exciting time for me to become the new director; existing programmes of work will be extended and new programmes developed."

IER welcomes its new doctoral students
Szilvia Schmitsek and Olga Siemers were welcomed to IER this month. Both are starting their doctoral studies at the Institute. Szilvia will be investigating the effectiveness of dropout-rate reducing strategies aimed at reintegrating individuals into the education system, the world of work and above all into society in the UK, Denmark and Hungary. Olga will be analysing the motivations of mobile researchers after they have obtained their doctorate.

New Leverhulme Early Career Fellow
IER welcomes Dr Milena Kremakova. Milena starts her 3-year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship this month at the Institute. She will be researching the early career trajectories of STEM graduates in the UK and Germany.

LMI for All project enters second phase
The second phase of the LMI for All project commissioned by UKCES is well underway. The LMI for All data tool brings together national sources of labour market information to make data freely available and to encourage open use by applications and websites. Phase 2A report now available.

Working for a Green Britain and Northern Ireland reports published
The recently published report, Working for a Green Britain and Northern Ireland 2013-23, looks at current and future employment and skills associated with the development of the UK wind and marine energy industries over the period 2010 to 2021. The research commissioned by RenewableUK and EU Skills was undertaken by IER in partnership with Cambridge Econometrics and IFF Research.

Successful ESRC seminar on Building Skills at an Individual Level
Professor Jenny Bimrose (IER) hosted the fourth Organisational Innovation ESRC seminar at the University of Warwick on 18 September. Professor Alan Brown and Dr Lynn Gambin, from IER, presented their research on individual knowledge, skills and capabilities.
