ACAS - Researching discipline and grievance in SMEs
The Warwick Institute for Employment Research has been commissioned by Acas to undertake some research looking at how small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) - those with up to 250 employees - handle conflict at the workplace; issues which are sometimes referred to by the shorthand of discipline and grievance (D&G).
We are looking for managers or SME owners to share their views on issues of D&G.
Who we are looking for?
- We need to speak to managers / owners in SMEs who have responsibility for issues of D&G.
- No experience of actually handling these issues is required, as we will talk about how hypothetical cases might be addressed.
Where and when will the focus groups take place?
- Sessions will be arranged according to participant availability, though as an indication we hope to arrange sessions at the end of June and during July 2015.
- Sessions will be held over the lunchtime period. Lunch will be provided for focus group participants.
- Focus groups will be held at the Acas offices in central Birmingham and at the University of Warwick.
What are the benefits of being involved?
- It is important that research understands the processes which operate in SMEs. SMEs make up the majority of employers, yet the vast majority of research is undertaken using data from larger organisations - it is important to make sure that the voice of SMEs is heard.
- The discussions will aim to be informative and thought-provoking. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from one another and learn more about sources of support and advice for dealing with the various types of situations.
How will the information be used?
- No individuals or organisations will be named in any of the research outputs and will be kept confidential to the research team at IER.
- Participants will be given a full transcript of the group which they attended and will have the opportunity to add any further information or insights by telephone or email.
- The information from the focus groups will be analysed and used in a short report for Acas. The information may be used in subsequent Acas publications and / or other academic outputs.
