Sector Skills Council Information, Advice and Guidance Role Development

Project provided consultancy support for the development of policy and practice in the area of labour market information for effective career guidance within Skillset. The main objectives were: to undertake research into the types of LMI career practitioners for the sector currently use and would like; and to develop, in consultation, a policy and relevant practices for the use of LMI in guidance. The study was funded by the Sector Skills Development Agency, through Skillset.

Information was collected from the sixteen Sector Skills Councils that took part in the initial survey formed the first phase of this study. A comparative analysis of data collected from
sixteen SSCs was undertaken, it has a dual focus:

  • First, to examine in some detail the origin and nature of services offered within each of the SSCs; and
  • Second, to review plans and possibilities for future development of the IAG function.

The second phase of investigation provided a more in-depth analysis of the role, development and nature of the information, advice and guidance function. Information was collected from the four Pathfinder Sector Skills Councils. At the time of writing, these were CITB-ConstructionSkills, e-skills UK, SEMTA and Skillset. The 2004 report presents a comparative analysis of data collected from these four SSCs examining the origin and nature of services offered within each of the Pathfinder SSCs. It also reviews plans and possibilities for future development of the IAG function.
