Why did you choose your particular degree course?

I chose this particular course because I already knew I wanted to work in the art world but was not sure whether I was ready to dedicate my whole university education to this subject. Language, Culture and Communication seemed to be the perfect compromise as it is broad enough to open doors to diverse industries while also being extremely relevant to the art world.

Tell us about your employer

Gagosian is a global network of art galleries specializing in modern and contemporary art with seventeen exhibition spaces accross the globe, including three different locations in London, where I work.

I am a Front Desk Associate at Gagosian London. This means that my desk is at the entrance of the gallery, and I greet the visitors and help them with any questions they may have. Moreover, this position works with all the different departments on various projects be it the internship program, research projects, or general gallery management.

What attracted you to this position?

I have had some work experience at Gagosian before and hoped to come back as I enjoyed the environment which is very challenging but creates a close-knit community. And of course, their artists are incredible.

What are the key skills you learnt at Warwick that have helped you with your career to date?

I think skills such as international business communication has been essential in the career path I have chosen as I deal with different people from different cultures every day, whether this is internal, working with the different Gagosian locations, or externally with third party employees and clients.

What has been your greatest career challenge to date and how did your experience and skills help overcome it?

The most difficult career challenge was probably starting to work during the pandemic. A gallery space is small and intimate, and as the staff came in on a rotating basis, it was hard to integrate myself at the start.

What top tips would you give to students looking for a career in your market sector?

I think experience is important, try to do as much as possible. Even if they aren't work experiences I met a lot of people just by going through art fairs, and exhibitions. Familiarise yourself with this environment.

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you were applying for jobs?

I think the art industry has a very specific image that can be very intimidating, for example the superficiality of it. This is something I was very worried about even though I had no reason to be worried about it. There may be a lot of industries that have specific stereotypes that may prevent you from going head on, but every experience is different, and it is what you make it.

Rejections are unfortunately a normal part of this process and you should just try to keep your head up and keep giving it your all!
