83% of PGRs
felt satisfied with the experience of their research degree programme, placing Warwick in the highest quarter among universities in the Russell Group. Our overseas research postgraduates were significantly more satisfied overall than the Russell Group benchmark, by 6.4%.

of Warwick PGRs were happy with their supervisor’s subject knowledge, feedback and contact with them.

Research Culture and Community

67%

of Warwick PGRs believe they had sufficient access to a good range of seminars in their research area, placing Warwick below average within the RG. 62% believe that the research community in their areas has had a positive influence on their work, placing Warwick in the highest RG quarter. 70% have developed contacts or professional networks during their programmes, placing Warwick above average within the RG.

Over 60%

felt a sense of community and belonging to the PGR community and their institution, which positions Warwick in the highest quarter among RG universities. However, comments suggest that many are not aware of opportunities to become involved in the wider research community, beyond their departments.

Action being taken

The first Festival of Doctoral Research took place in Summer 2023. The festival provided opportunities for PGRs to engage in a range of networking activities beyond their departments including interdisciplinary research talks, academic and non-academic career panels, and traditional and untraditional research showcase.

In 2022-2023, our Networking Fund funded a range of PGR networks including Gender and the Middle East working group, and Warwick Performance and Politics Network.

Research Skills and Professional Development

Over 85%

are happy with their development of research skills in applying appropriate research methodologies, tools and techniques and in critically analysing and evaluating findings and results, placing Warwick above average within the RG. Comments suggest that research training is sometimes too general to meet their academic skills needs.

felt better prepared for their future career as a result of their research degree, placing Warwick below average within the RG. Comments suggest that PGRs often feel that it is up to them to seek out and take advantage of professional development opportunities.

of PGRs had opportunities to teach or demonstrate during their research degree programme, placing Warwick in the top quarter of the Russell Group. 70% of them received formal training for their teaching, and 62% of them received support and guidance for teaching, placing Warwick above average within the RG.

Resources and Support

Around 90%

of Warwick PGRs have sufficient access to both physical and online library resources.

83%

are satisfied with the access to working space on campus, placing Warwick in the second-highest quarter within the RG.

felt sufficient support for their health and wellbeing, placing Warwick below average within the RG.
