Pull-down list question
Pull-down questions enable authors to present a series of choices. Each choice has a valid option available in a drop-down menu. The participant can select from a pull-down list of options their answer for each choice.
Adding the Question Wording
To create or edit the wording of your question:
- Click on Click here to change the question wording and enter your desired text.
- Use the text formatting toolbar to style the question wording as needed. For more details, refer to Using the text formatting toolbar.
When the question wording, choices, options, and description are in place, it’s recommended to check spelling by selecting the Spell Check button.
Saving the Question
You have the following options when saving your question:
- Save: Saves all changes and keeps the question editor open. A confirmation message will appear.
- Save and New: Click the drop-down arrow next to Save, then:
- Select Save and new Multiple Choice to start a new Multiple Choice question.
- Hover over Save and new... to select a different question type.
- Choose Save and Exit to save changes and leave the editor.
- Note: If changes are made to a question, you must add a revision comment before exiting.
Setting the Delivery Style
Choose your question delivery style:
- Scored: Enables specific scoring and feedback options for question choices.
- Unscored: Ideal for survey assessments, without scoring or feedback options.
Creating Question Choices
A default choice, titled Enter new choice text here, is preloaded in the Pull-down question. To customize it:
- Click on the default choice text and enter your wording.
- Use the formatting toolbar as needed.
To add additional choices, click Add a New Choice. To delete a choice, click the delete icon next to it.
Ordering Choices
Arrange or shuffle choices as follows:
- To order choices: Select and drag choices to the desired location.
- To shuffle choices: Choose a shuffling option from the drop-down menu in the toolbar:
- No shuffling: Choices remain in your specified order.
- All: Choices are randomized.
- All but last choice: All choices are shuffled except the last.
- All but last two choices: All choices are shuffled except the last two.
- Note: If you want your choices presented in a specific order, make sure No Shuffling is selected.
Creating Question Options
Question options are the answers displayed in the drop-down menu. These options are shared across all choices in the question.
- Click Edit Options in the Toolbox.
- Enter each option on a new line.
- Click Save when done to add them to the drop-down list.
Setting the Correct Answers
Once you have added choices and options, designate the correct answer for each choice by selecting the appropriate option from the drop-down menu.
Scoring Answers
Specify the scoring for the Pull-down answer:
- Enter the score in the provided text box.
- Adjust using the up/down arrows as needed.
Setting Feedback
Add feedback to help participants understand why an answer is correct or incorrect:
- Click on Enter new feedback here and type your feedback.
- Leave the field empty if you do not wish to include feedback, so it defaults to Enter new feedback here.
Example feedback: “Incorrect. The correct pairings are United States - New York, Germany - Berlin, and Japan - Tokyo.”
Adding a Question Description
Question descriptions provide additional context:
- Click Edit Question Description.
- Enter a description (up to 200 characters) and select OK.
- If no description is added, the question wording will be used by default.
Adding a Comment Box
Comment boxes allow participants to submit additional responses, especially useful in surveys.
- Click Add Comment Box to add a comment field at the bottom of the question.
- Edit the introductory text, which defaults to Add your comment:.
Adding an Additional Outcome
An additional outcome can be created for instances when a participant attempts to move forward without completing a question:
- Click Additional Outcome to open the outcome screen.
- Enter feedback specific to the “no answer” outcome.
- Click Save to apply the outcome.
