Select a blank question

In Select a Blank questions participants indicate their answer by selecting the word(s) or phrase(s) missing from the question wording from a pull-down list of choices.

1. Adding Question Wording

  • To create or edit the wording for your Select a Blank question:
    • Click on "Click here to change the question wording" and enter your desired text.
    • Use the text formatting toolbar to customize the appearance of the question.
  • Spelling Check:
    • After entering your wording, click the Spell check button to ensure there are no spelling errors.

2. Saving Changes

  • Save Options:
    • Click Save to save all changes and continue editing; a confirmation message will appear.
    • Click the drop-down arrow next to Save for additional options:
      • Save and new Multiple Choice: Saves changes and starts a new Multiple Choice question.
      • Hover over Save and new. Select a different question type.
      • Save and exit: Saves changes and exits the question editor.
  • If any changes are made, you must enter a revision comment before exiting.

3. Exiting the Editor

  • Click Exit to leave the question editor. A warning message will appear if there are unsaved changes.

Setting the Delivery Style

  • Delivery Styles:
    • Scored: Allows specific scoring and feedback values for the question choices.
    • Unscored: Provides a straightforward layout for survey-based assessments, allowing feedback but no score settings.

Creating Blanks

  • Note: When selecting a word by double-clicking, trailing spaces may be selected. To avoid this, use the mouse to highlight the exact text or use the Shift + left arrow key to deselect unwanted spaces.

Creating a Blank:

  1. Highlight the word or phrase you want to make a blank.
  2. Click Create a blank.
    • This creates a selectable blank in the question wording.
  3. Beneath the question wording, you can set values for this blank:
    • In the Correct value field, edit the blank's correct answer (changes reflect in the question wording).
    • Click the Edit button next to the Incorrect values field to enter incorrect answers, one per line. Click OK to save or Cancel to discard.
  4. To create more blanks, repeat the highlighting and clicking process.

Warning: Each blank can only be selected once by participants.

Deleting a Blank:

  • To delete:
    • Select the blank in the question wording and press Delete.
    • A prompt will appear to confirm deletion. Click OK to proceed or Cancel to abort.
  • To clear all blanks, click Reset all blanks and confirm in the prompt.

Editing a Blank:

  • Double-clicking on a blank in the wording field selects it, allowing immediate editing.

Scoring Answers

  • By default, Score per blank is enabled, awarding a score for each blank correctly filled.
  • To set scores:
    • Enter desired scores in the Correct score field for correct answers and Incorrect score field for incorrect answers.
    • If Score per blank is unchecked, a score is only awarded if all blanks are filled correctly.

Showing Feedback

  • You can provide feedback based on participants' answers.
    • If using Score per blank, enter specific feedback for each blank in the corresponding feedback fields.
    • If not using this option, provide overall feedback for correctly or incorrectly filling all blanks.

Adding a Comment Box

  • To allow participants to provide additional responses:
    • Click Add comment box to include it at the bottom of the question.
    • Specify prompt text in the Add your comment field.
