Essay question

An Essay question allows you to ask participants open ended questions that you want them to answer in an essay-style response.

  1. Customize the Question Wording
Click Click here to change the question wording to edit the question text. Use the text formatting toolbar to style the text as you like. For detailed instructions, see Using the text formatting toolbar.

  2. Save Your Work
After making changes, select Save to apply them. A confirmation message will appear once the question is saved successfully.

  3. Exiting the Editor
If changes were made, you’ll need to enter a brief revision comment before exiting. Click Exit to leave the editor, where a prompt will remind you to save any unsaved edits.

Defining Scoring

  • Set the maximum score by entering a value in the Max score field.
  • Essay questions remain unscored upon submission until manually reviewed using the assigned rubrics.

Adding Feedback

  • You can provide general feedback (e.g., “Your answers will be reviewed and scored”) or offer specific guidelines for participants’ responses.
  • Enter feedback text in the This question has not yet been scored field.

Including a Comment Box

  • To allow participants to respond within a comment box, click Add comment box. Adjust the introductory text in the Add your comment field and resize the box as needed by dragging its corner.

Editing Question Properties

  • For details like the question description and workflow status, click Edit question properties. These can be useful for internal reviews and question tracking.

Adding Notes

  • Any user with edit permissions can add notes (only visible to other editors) to a question:
    • Click Notes, enter your text in the Note field, and select Post to save. Use Clear to remove the text in progress.

Assigning Metatags

  • To assign metatags for organizational purposes, click Assign metatags. Select the relevant tags, then click OK to save, or Cancel to exit without saving.

Additional Considerations

  • For Essay questions, two outcomes are generated:
    • Unscored outcome: displays a default message to the participant.
    • Scored outcome: enables setting a maximum score, which can be used with external grading tools like Questionmark's Scoring Tool.
