About EchoVideo

EchoVideo is provided by Echo360 as part of the EchoSystem, and is the University of Warwick’s lecture capture platform. It offers three options for recording - Automated Lecture Capture, Universal and Browser Capture.

Automated Lecture Capture offers scheduled capture of content in supported rooms with various options of what to capture.

Universal and Browser Capture allow for the capture of teaching material outside of supported Lecture Capture spaces using personal or managed University devices.

EchoVideo captures are stored and managed on the Echo360 website (https://echo360.org.uk). Staff and students typically access them via the EchoVideo block in Moodle, although staff involved in administration or support may also access and manage recordings directly through the Echo360 site.

EchoVideo also has an active learning platform available to students via web and mobile devices.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use the EchoVideo service. Here are some key features offered by Echo360:

  • Support for closed captioning and transcripts for videos.
  • Keyboard navigation.
  • Screen readers JAWS 2022.
  • Features that ensure audio and video content is accessible, including captioning and descriptive audio.
  • Adjustable contrast and text scaling

How accessible is this platform?

EchoVideo as a Platform

See https://EchoVideo.com/accessibility/ for the EchoVideo platform accessibility statement.

"Our products are designed and developed to comply with the internationally recognized Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, including Section 508 standards in the United States.."

Content Hosted on EchoVideo

See https://EchoVideo.com/video-accessibility/Link opens in a new window and https://echo360.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/EchoVideo-VPAT-Apr-2025.pdf for EchoVideo video accessibility information.

EchoVideo recordings are designed to be accessible from a variety of devices and operating systems. The service provides automated transcription, the option to edit the transcription for accuracy, and options to amend the font, contrast, location and alignment of captions. However, the April 2025 Accessibility Conformance Report notes that some parts of the platform are not fully accessible:

  • Some prerecorded videos may not have captions or complete transcripts.
  • Some images and other non-text elements lack alternative text.
  • Certain interactive controls are not fully accessible by keyboard, and skip-link navigation is missing.
  • Some page titles are incomplete or missing.
  • Some form fields are visually labelled but do not have the correct programmatic label.
  • ARIA roles and states are inconsistently applied, affecting screen reader navigation.
  • On some pages, content may be cut off when text is enlarged to 200%, and page headers may require horizontal scrolling on small screens.
  • Some live status messages are not announced to screen reader users.

Compliance status

This platform is compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard.

EchoVideo have stated that this platform is compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standardLink opens in a new window. This information is provided by https://EchoVideo.com/accessibility/Link opens in a new window

However, we have noted some potential exceptions below.

Non accessible content

Students encountering any of the potential accessibility issues below should please report it to helpdesk at warwick dot ac dot uk.

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non compliance with the accessibility regulations

Content uploaded before September 23rd 2020 may not have a transcript or captions. These can be requested retrospectively if you require them.

Disproportionate burden

Whilst we aim for content hosted within our digital learning environment to be accessible, ensuring the items below are fully accessible would place a disproportionate burden on content authors and the University. We will continue to review this list and seek out efficient and cost-effective solutions.

Audio and video transcripts and captions

Automatically generated transcripts and captions are unlikely to be 100% accurate with many factors impacting the accuracy of machine transcription.

We have assessed the cost of checking and correcting automatically generated transcripts and captions. We believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment in 2026.

This doesn’t meet the following WCAG success criterion:

  • 1.1.1 (Non-text content)
  • 1.2.1 (audio-only and video-only - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.2 (captions – prerecorded)

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 section 4.2. Application.Link opens in a new window

Pre-recorded Audio and Video content published before 23 September 2020

Pre-recorded audio and video content is unlikely to be accompanied with a text alternative, captions, audio description or sign language interpretation. This doesn’t meet the following success criterion:

  • 1.1.1 (non-text content)
  • 1.2.1 (audio-only and video-only - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.2 (captions – prerecorded)
  • 1.2.3 (audio description or media alternative - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.5 (audio description - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.6 (sign language - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.7 (extended audio description - prerecorded)
  • 1.2.8 (media alternative - prerecorded)

We don’t plan to create a text alternative, captions, audio description or sign language interpretation to prerecorded audio or video content that was published before 23 September 2020 because prerecorded audio and video content published before 23 September 2020 are exempt from the regulations.

Live Audio and Video

Live audio and video streams don’t have captions. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.4 (captions - live).

We don’t plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are dedicated to improving the accessibility of this platform for all users. To do so we will:

  • Provide feedback to EchoVideo relating to accessibility issues.
  • Repeat a disproportionate burden assessment to reassess the cost of checking and correcting automated transcripts and captions in 2026.
  • Assess proposed new features, integrations, interfaces and developments based on the WCAG 2.2 success criterion.
