Add videos and external media
Add videos as external media links directly to the page. Videos are often very large files and Mahara quotas are limited to 1gb. Warwick uses eStream for video storage and streaming but this process works for many video streaming sites.
Add a video using external media
- Turn on editing on a page using the pencil edit icon at the top right.
- Click and drag the drag to add a block icon from the top right-hand side of the page to the appropriate location on the page. Existing blocks will move to make space.
- A window will fly in from the right. Click More and then click on the External Media block in the list.
- Edit the block title if required.
- Paste in the URL or the embed code for the video.
- Optionally, set the height and width of the video
- Click Save and the video will appear on the page as either an embedded, playable video, or as a link to the video, depending on the streaming service. This may take some experimentation. Generally, it is recommended to use 'embed' if you want the video to play within the portfolio.
Add a video file
We do not recommend this due to the potential file size but it is possible to add small videos directly.
Videos should have MP4 format (with h264 video and acc audio) to ensure they play when embedded. Other formats may not be supported by web browsers and will appear as a file download link instead.
- Upload the video following the instructions for uploading a file.
- Turn on editing on a page using the pencil edit icon at the top right.
- Click and drag the drag to add a block icon from the top right-hand side of the page to the appropriate location on the page. Existing blocks will move to make space.
- A window will fly in from the right. Click More and then click on the Embedded Media button.
- Edit the block title if required.
- Select the video from the available files (or upload the video if you skipped step 1).
- Add Tags.
- Click Save and the video will appear on the page.
