Cost of living: food and drink

The majority of these adverts were published in trade union and labour movement journals between 1911-1929, and would have been targeted at a working class audience. They give information about the cost of certain packaged items of food and drink, including powdered milk for infants. The majority of food would have been purchased on the High Street - at grocers, greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers. Some families may also have been able to grow their own fruit and vegetables in a garden or allotment, or keep a few animals for food.
