The National Union of Clerks was formed in 1890 and changed its name to the National Union of Clerks and Administrative Workers in 1920. In 1941 it amalgamated with the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries under the new name of the Clerical and Administrative Workers' Union. In 1972 the union changed its name to the Association of Professional, Executive, Clerical and Computer Staff, known as APEX. In 1989 APEX merged with the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union.

The Modern Records Centre has a large but incomplete run of the union's journal 'The Clerk' / 'APEX' between 1908-1989. Editions of 'The Clerk' between 1908-1912, 1916-1931 and 1938-9 have been digitised and are available through our online catalogue. Subjects include: the work of a clerk, the history of the union, wages and working conditions, women workers (including 'Women's Page'), branch and district news, the First World War and other contemporary international and domestic events. Cartoons and photographs are also included.
