An outing to Stamford Bridge, 1914
Group photograph showing the Sports Committee of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners on the pitch at Chelsea's ground. Trade unions operated a variety of sporting and social clubs for their members.
Stamford Bridge was originally built as an athletics stadium, and became the home stadium of the newly formed Chelsea Football Club in 1905 (and one of the largest football grounds in the country). The terraces and some of the spectators can be seen in the background.
