Promoting a protest at Warwick propelled Dr Andrew Whitehead (MA Social History, 1989; PhD History, 2013) towards a career in journalism. Having joined as a trainee at the BBC for just three months, Andrew went on to spend 35 years with BBC News. In his last role as Editor of BBC World Service News, Andrew was responsible for programming on the BBC's most widely listened to radio network, with a global weekly reach of about 100 million listeners.

Andrew returned to campus earlier this year, where he spoke at a Careers event for History students, and was interviewed by final year History student Enoch Mukungu (pictured left).

Coventry's year as 'UK City of Culture 2021' draws to a close in April 2022. The University of Warwick will celebrate Coventry's magnificent tenure with a campus finale of the Resonate Festival, taking place from the 19^th - 21^st April 2022.

But what does it mean to be a 'City of Culture', and from where did this scheme originate? Who chooses the 'winning' city, what sorts of criteria are used to select the winner, and what is expected of a city once they have been awarded the title?

In this episode of #FacultyofArtsatHomeLink opens in a new window, PhD Researcher Emily Dunford - whose research specifically focuses on Coventry's tenure as UK City of Culture 2021 - will answer these questions and more, providing insights into the wider social, economic and political aspects of the scheme and how it shapes the places where we live.

Global Sustainable Development launches new postgraduate programmes. From September 2021 onwards the new MASc will be available, offering a combination of an Arts (MA) and Sciences (MSc) award. Based in the School for Cross-faculty Studies, their academic home is a natural place to offer a combination of these awards, and they are one of the first Master’s courses in the UK to be doing so.

On Thursday, 12 November 2020 the University celebrated completing the final storey of the new Faculty of Arts Building with a “topping out” ceremony.

Nurturing creative practice alongside academic knowledge

A new creative venture from the Faculty of Arts will help develop the University as a powerhouse for the artistic, cultural, creative and media industries in the region and beyond. The new School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures will redefine Warwick’s teaching and research in the arts, cultural and creative industries – offering great opportunities for students, graduates, external partners, academics and for public engagement.

Mika Watkins studied English Literature at Warwick, before going on to create and executive-produce the hit YouTube premium series Origin. Her writing credits include Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix horror series Cabinet Of Curiosities; Stan Lee’s Lucky Man on Sky 1; and BBC1 period drama Troy: Fall of a City.

Mika will return to the English Department next Wednesday, 1^st February to share her experiences in the TV and film industries with current Arts Faculty students. 

Study buddies is a [currently virtual] programme delivered by the Arts Faculty. The programme provides a space where students can write, read and work on their assessments in a supportive working environment.

At each Study Buddies session an academic will be on hand to provide support and guidance with assessments, read excerpts of your work, help you to understand feedback and be a mock audience for presentations. You can also find out where to go for more specialist support, such as academic writing, digital proficiency or employability skills.
