IER Newsletter - February 2018 Invitation to speak at OECD meeting IER’s Director, Chris WarhurstLink opens in a new window, has been invited to speak at the OECD’s annual Local Economic and Employment Development (LEEDLink opens in a new window) meeting. Speaking along with Richard Garrett of the UK Government’s Department for Education, the session will focus on putting skills utilisation into practice. The meeting takes place at the OECD in Paris over 17-18 May. 'Working Futures' review Alex Hall, Director and Chief Economist in the Department of Labor and Employment for the state of Colorado, visited IER in February. Alex is an expert advisor to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics in the US and works with Professor Rob Wilson to review Working Futures, IER’s flagship programme modelling the UK labour market and funded by the UK Government. Turning career policy into practical solutions Sally-Anne BarnesLink opens in a new window was part of the first StartLink opens in a new window Roadshow 'Turning careers policy into practical solutions' on 26 January. The event hosted by JP Morgan was aimed at helping schools and colleges translate the recent careers guidance strategy into practical solutions and deliver on outcomes for young people. Sally-Anne provided an overview of her work at IER on careers, and presented on LMI for AllLink opens in a new window. The LMI for All service provides access to reliable labour market information and underpins the information provided in Start. Sally-Anne and Daria Luchinskaya are currently working with the Start team to capture data relating to the effectiveness of careers information and guidance, drive improved personalisation for Start users and provide evidence of what works. Discussing Precarious Pathways to Employment IER's Kate PurcellLink opens in a new window and Peter EliasLink opens in a new window presented preliminary findings from the ESRC-funded Precarious Pathways to EmploymentLink opens in a new window project at the annual networking event of CREWLink opens in a new window Network (Connecting Research on Employment and Work) at the University of Warwick on January 31st. The audience included fellow academics, postgraduate students and practitioners working with young people in the Midlands. New PhD studentship: Employer engagement with apprenticeships With Professor Mel SimmsLink opens in a new window of Glasgow University, Chris WarhurstLink opens in a new window has secured a collaborative PhD studentship with Skills Development ScotlandLink opens in a new window and the Scottish Graduate School of Social ScienceLink opens in a new window. The research will focus on explaining employer engagement with apprenticeships and will start in autumn 2018. The studentship will be based at Glasgow University and will be advertised shortly.
