Seasons Greetings from ReWAGE - and a quick review of 2022

In Spring 2022, ReWAGE secured additional funding to support two new projects, and we had nine active sub-groups working on papers for publication. Our co-chairs joined the steering group of the Business in a Pandemic World APPG and appeared on an expert panel at a CIPD national conference. ReWAGE co-chair Professor Irena Grugulis spoke at the Chief Economic Development Officers Society event and at the Liverpool City Region APPG. And co-chair Professor Chris Warhurst spoke at the Preparatory Meeting of the 30th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum. |

In April, our work to engage policy workers ‘behind the scenes’ started to come to fruition - we provided evidence to support the development of the Women and Work APPG’s annual report, and expertise to the government’s Flexible Working Taskforce. In May we partnered with Disability@Work to respond to the government’s consultation on disability workforce reporting. We also published the policy briefing - Recovering Better – improving mental health in the workplace. |

In June we published the policy briefing: ‘Beyond the National Living Wage – further proposals for addressing low pay’, which argues that improving conditions for those who are low paid should be at the heart of a socially just labour market policy. Professors Peter Elias and Chris Warhurst presented to BEIS officials on ReWAGE’s work to derive information from national data sources to help quantify what makes a ‘good job’ We were also featured in the 10th edition of the Edge Foundation’s Skills Shortages Bulletin. |

In July, Professor Irena Grugulis spoke at the Northern Powerhouse Education, Employment and Skills Summit 2022 and we held a live online briefing on Six changes in public policy that would help the low-paid - hosted by Observer columnist Will Hutton. We also published our feasibility study into using existing data sets to monitor UK job quality |

In August we responded to the government’s call for evidence on its Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan and published a report in partnership with the Migration Observatory at Oxford University about labour shortages in the UK, which received widespread media coverage. |

In September we released ReWAGE’s Review of Employment Charters, which are driving better job quality in the regions. |

In October we looked back on ‘1 year of ReWAGE’ and celebrated how our experts had worked together over a 12-month period to produce consultation responses, policy briefings and evidence papers on a wide range of work and employment issues, spoken at conferences, events and government meetings, and much more. |

In November we held an event at Portcullis House, in Westminster, welcoming Parliamentarians from constituencies across the country, representatives from the House of Lords and colleagues from the CIPD, the Institute for Hospitality, the Corporation of London and the Gatsby Foundation. We also published Eight actions to tackle the impact of the cost-of-living crisis authored by ReWAGE expert Professor Ashwin Kumar (Manchester Metropolitan University). |

And now it’s December already, but the hard graft hasn’t stopped – some of our experts have recently written a series of blogs for partner websites, highlighting our work and publications. We have also just published a new evidence paper about upskilling and reskilling adult workers – the problem of employer demand. And Professor Irena Grugulis has written an article for FE News on the same subject. |
