Spotlight on: Professor Ashwin Kumar (Manchester Metropolitan University)

ReWAGE is fortunate in having some of the UK’s foremost thinkers on its Expert Group, drawn from leading universities and research organisations from across the UK. Between them they have a huge breadth of knowledge, covering such subjects as the labour market, job quality, employment relations and the changing nature of work.

This week we are pointing the spotlight onto ReWAGE expert Professor Ashwin Kumar who is Professor of Social Policy and Deputy Director of the Policy Evaluation Research Unit at Manchester Metropolitan University and ReWAGE's expert on analysis and modelling of incomes, poverty and the labour market.

New ReWAGE policy brief - Eight actions to tackle the impact of the cost-of-living crisis

ReWAGE's new policy brief finds that the current cost-of-living crisis is ‘unprecedented’ with a combination of high inflation, low wages and a drop in benefits that hasn’t been seen before.

The report examines the causes and impacts of the cost-of-living crisis, and proposes eight actions that would help to alleviate its devastating effects – potentially assisting millions of households who have seen their ‘real’ disposable income fall sharply since late 2021.

New book from ReWAGE expert Professor Ashwin Kumar

ReWAGE expert Professor Ashwin Kumar has just published a new book, Idleness, in collaboration with colleague Dr Katy Jones.

Idleness examines the myth that any job – no matter how insecure or poorly paid – is better than no job, considers why so many people in the UK are stuck in low-paid work with little chance of progression, and asks what can be done about it.
