Introduction to Moodle

Students should visit the Moodle Student Guides.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is a web platform known as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which is specifically designed to support the delivery of teaching and learning materials and activities. Moodle is available to all staff and students at Warwick.

You can use Moodle for a wide range of purposes, including:

  • To provide course resources and subject content to students
  • To enhance learning through Moodle activities
  • To facilitate communication, for example through discussion forums
  • To facilitate collaboration, for example through group work
  • To facilitate assessment, for example assignment submissions and quizzes
  • To check for plagiarism
  • To track students' progress through a course
  • To gather feedback

Logging in

Moodle uses the same 'single sign on' details as other Warwick services, such as Tabula, email and web pages. The same account is used to access various University systems, websites or platforms making accessing different online services easier.

    1. Go to www.moodle.warwick.ac.ukLink opens in a new window and click Sign in.
    2. Enter your University username, e.g u1234567, then click Next.
    3. Enter your University password, then click Sign in. You will be taken to the two-factor authentication screen.
    4. Type in the verification code generated in your app or sent to you via text message, and click Verify.
    5. Select whether you'd like to stay logged in (Yes or No).
    6. You will now be logged in and taken to your Moodle dashboard.

Troubleshooting if you are unable to login to Moodle
You cannot use these details to sign in to Moodle at Warwick using the Moodle App. Moodle is only accessible via a web browser.
      • Check that your details are working for www.warwick.ac.uk/insite. If your login details are not working for this service, please contact the Help Desk on 024 765 73737 or helpdesk at warwick dot ac dot uk to reset your password.
      • If you are a new starter, you will not be able to access Moodle immediately as your details will not have been transferred into Moodle yet. Try accessing again the following day.

      Your Moodle profile

Your profile contains limited information such as your name, email address, and department which is visible to other users and cannot be edited. You can view your profile by selecting Profile from the user menu in the top-right corner, then clicking the Details tab.

If you like, you can add more information to your profile such as additional names, interests, and a user photo.

You can find more information on editing your profile on the MoodleDocs website.

      Moodle spaces

A Moodle space is generated automatically for each module in SITS. Ad hoc spaces which aren't linked to SITS can also be created by your department's Academic Technologist or super user. Alternatively, you can request an ad hoc space by emailing moodle at warwick dot ac dot uk.

      Accessing your module spaces

If you are enrolled on a Moodle space, it will be available in your Moodle dashboard.

      For staff

The staff member specified as the module leader in SITS is automatically enrolled as 'course leader' on the Moodle space.

The course leader can manually enrol any additional teaching colleagues or admininistrative staff as required. We recommend you choose a role other than course leader for these staff, to easily distinguish the module leader.

      For students

Students are automatically enrolled on to Moodle module spaces based on the modules listed in their SITS student record. Ad hoc spaces that aren't linked to SITS will use other enrolment methods to ensure students have access.

For further advice on enrolling users, please see our guide on enrolment methodsLink opens in a new window.

How do I make sure my content meets digital accessibility requirements?

Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 came in to force on 23rd September 2018. In addition to our existing obligations and legal requirements, the regulations require the University to ensure that all websites and content are accessible and meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. The regulations apply to Moodle VLE.
