Overview

Education covers teaching in a range of settings; advisory roles, educational psychology and administration. Many of the roles will involve postgraduate study. You need to consider what age range you would like to work with, whether you would prefer to work with individual or groups.

Routes into teaching

There are a number of different routes into teaching. To find out more have a look at Get Into Teaching: Ways to train (education.gov.uk)

Your options include:

• The Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Warwick which offers teacher training courses
• Teach First
• Ark teacher training

To become a fully qualified teacher and to work in state-maintained schools in England and Wales, you will need to gain QTS first. After completing a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), you are then assessed during an induction period in a school.

Since 2012 you don't have to have the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in an academy.

PGCE is the most common route into teaching.

N.B. There are minimum GCSE requirements for initial teacher training which often have to be met at the time of applying.

Finding teaching jobs

• Read advice from Target Jobs about getting your first job in teaching, and where to find vacancies as an Early Careers Teacher (ECT)
• Consider registering with a teaching recruitment agency such as Eteach, Amethyst Education or i-teachers. Other agencies may be available, always check to see what kinds of vacancies they can offer.
