You will notice that very few jobs - unless academic related - explicitly state a PhD as an entry requirement. Not all employers will automatically value (or even understand!) a PhD and it is up to you to articulate your skills and experience and show that you can 'add value' to an organisation.

Make sure you thoroughly research any potential careers to help you decide what's a 'good fit'. This knowledge will also help you produce credible applications and show an employer that you are a serious candidate.

A few tips

• Be tenacious, particularly if you are applying for academic positions. Very few candidates are offered the first post they apply/interview for.
• Job sectors - look at the information on our job sector pages and Prospects.ac.uk. Although geared towards undergraduates, it's relevant if you are thinking of leaving academia.
• Be pro-active in your job search - if you don't see your 'ideal' job advertised then consider making speculative approaches to employers. You may even convince them to offer you a job, or at the very least, work experience.
• Networking - explore information on networking.
• Hidden job market - explore the information on the hidden job market.
• Careers Consultant - if your job seeking efforts are failing to generate interviews or offers come and talk to a Careers Consultant. It may simply be a question of re-framing your CV or practising your interview technique.
