'Clothiers Operatives Monthly Gazette', 1898-1900

The Amalgamated Union of Clothiers' Operatives was formed in 1894 by the amalgamation of the Bristol Clothiers Cutters Trade Association and the Leeds Wholesale Clothiers Operatives Union. In 1915 it was a founder member of the United Garment Workers Union.

The Modern Records Centre has one volume of the union's journal, the 'Clothiers Operatives Monthly Gazette', which includes an incomplete series of issues from February 1898 to February 1900. This has been digitised and is freely available through our online catalogue. Subjects include: state of trade, industrial disputes, branch and district news, employment of women, non-unionists, piece-work and 'sweating' in the textile trades.
