'Postman's Gazette', 1895-1918
The Postmen's Federation was founded in 1891 following the collapse of an earlier organisation, the Postmen's Union. In 1919 it was one of the unions which amalgamated to form the Union of Post Office Workers (UPW). The union's journal 'Postman's Gazette' was first published in May 1892. The Modern Records Centre has an incomplete run of the Gazette from May 1895 to December 1918 (with some gaps in the 1890s), the majority of which have been digitised and are available through our online catalogue.
'Postman's Gazette' includes general information about the union and the postal service, branch news, correspondence and advertisements; illustrated profiles of members are included in earlier volumes, and comments on current affairs and cartoons can be included in later editions. During the First World War period, the journal includes photographs of members serving in the military.
