World Digital Preservation Day 2024 Event
Join us on 7th November 2024
Eren and Rachel from the Modern Records Centre will be hosting a drop in session between 11 and 3 in the Library Ground Floor Meeting Room. Come and join us to talk about doing a Digital Clean-Up!
The chances are you are keeping lots of files that you don’t need to – doing some digital housekeeping is good for the environment and helps you find the information you need, as well as information which should be kept for the long term. Could you spend 10 minutes doing a tidy up of your digital storage?

Digital preservation
Digital preservation is the process by which we ensure that digital information is preserved and available to access over the course of time regardless of format or media. It supports the availability of information beyond the limits of technological or organisational change or failure. It's a continuous series of activities by which we plan for the future whilst at the same time ensure that the authenticity of information is upheld.
Environmental sustainability
How much data we keep (and conversely delete) has an impact on the environment. Data centres for cloud storage that increasingly hosts our personal and work data now collectively have a bigger carbon footprint than the airline industry, and account for 2% of the world's carbon emissions (x).
Managing information
Good information management is important for helping ensure we only keep what is important, so that we lessen our carbon footprint and so that we can find the information we need quickly and efficiently.
