Course overview

Three students having a friendly discussion
  • A curriculum for today’s jobs: You will develop skills in mathematical and statistical modelling, software engineering and algorithm design which build a strong foundation for careers in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, finance, telecoms and scientific research. The fourth year of the MSci degree offers the possibility to specialise in areas such as advanced statistical learning and big data, high-performance computing, algorithmic game theory, computational biology and statistical genetics. In the third year students complete a project and in the fourth year a dissertation. When available projects and dissertations may be offered in collaboration with industry. The degree is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society, meaning that you will be able to qualify as a Chartered Statistician after five years of relevant work experience.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach: In the first year you will take core modules delivered by four research-strong departments (Business School, Computer Science, Mathematics Institute and Statistics). This enables you to choose optional modules offered by these departments in the second year.
  • Academic support: We have an established support system to help you with the transition into higher education, including a refresher course and small group support classes. For example, during Year 1, your mathematics homework will be marked by a supervisor who will discuss the feedback with you in small groups.
  • Option to add Year in Industry or Study Abroad Year: You may choose to spend an intercalated year in an approved industry, business or university between your last two years at Warwick, subject to availability and to satisfactory academic performance. You will be supported by a Senior Careers Consultant or the Study Abroad Team during the application process.

Entry requirements

Modules

You will learn through a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials and practical sessions supported by the Department’s well-equipped undergraduate computing laboratory. The course covers theoretical and more applied subjects with a strong emphasis on problem solving. Teaching methods and delivery are adapted to the specific subjects.

The curriculum is such that there are fewer core modules and more optional modules as you progress through the degree. You may even choose to study a small number of modules outside of the Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Departments.

  • Year One: 100% core
  • Year Two: about 20% optional modules
  • Year Three: about 60% optional modules
  • Year Four: about 75% optional modules

Note that the module catalogue is subject to change for future years of study, as we evolve our courses in response to the latest developments in academia and industry.
