When Mathew arrived at Warwick, the disparity in career education between the state and private sector was clear, inspiring him to tackle social mobility and to level the career playing field. This led him to found Warwick's 16-18 widening participation mentorship scheme and working with a local disadvantaged school to address pre-university barriers. Though he faced challenges, he pitched the initiative to Warwick Volunteers, and with their support he secured professional training, recruited and prepared 12 mentors and built a structured programme.Together, they delivered bi-weekly academic and career support.

Mathew recognised that support must continue beyond the school gates and into university life.As President of The 93% Club Warwick, he created a supportive community for state-educated students and shared career insights. He then adopted a strategic approach, securing £10,000 in sponsorship from 15 employers.

Leading a team of 23, over 65 events were hosted, including the society’s annual Christmas networking event, which saw attendance soar by 150%.

Another notable event was the Senior Leader Speaker Series, where Mathews team welcomed socially mobile leaders from consulting, law, and finance. By collaborating with Warwick’s largest societies and leveraging his network, students were offered a rare glimpse into top industries.

In response to the cost-of-living crisis, Mathew introduced a workwear bursary and a grocery gift card scheme. 20 members received £50 towards interview attire, while 40 students per term received £30 Aldi vouchers. He also launched a bi-weekly free breakfast, negotiating a three-piece menu with Curiositea, serving an average of 50 students per event.

Membership of the 93% Club Warwick more than doubled to 550, and the social media following grew by 80%. For this work, Mathew was honoured with an UpReach Student Social Mobility Award.

Beyond social mobility, Mathew is deeply passionate about LGBTQ+ rights.
