Welcome to The School of Modern Languages and Cultures

Welcome message from Professor Elisabeth Herrmann and Dr Joanne Lee

(Co-Heads of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures)

Congratulations on your results!

We're delighted that you'll be joining us this year. Starting university is an exciting step: over the coming year you'll have the chance to explore new interests and ideas through our modules and societies, as well as meet people from a wide range of backgrounds. As you settle in, remember that university is about more than just your studies. Finding a balance between academic work and your other interests is important for your wellbeing and for your personal and professional development.
Don't forget to make time for the things that help you stay happy and healthy, whether that's sport, music, societies, spending time with friends, or simply taking a break when you need one.
We hope your first year is rewarding, enjoyable, and full of discovery. There may well be a few challenges along the way, but in SMLC you are surrounded by people who want to support you. We look forward to welcoming you to our community and seeing where your studies take you.
See you soon!
Elisabeth and Jo
