Two PhD Studentships to work on ESRC-funded project CLOSING DATE EXTENDED TO 28 MAY 2014
We are looking for two enthusiastic Masters graduates with relevant interests in recent labour market history to take up fully funded ESRC PhD studentships, starting in October 2014 and attached to an ESRC research programme, Precarious pathways to employment for young people? The reseaarch will explore the dynamics of transitions from education to work in local, regional and historical contexts during previous economic recessions (specifically the 1930s and the 1980s). The areas under study are Leicester and Birmingham/Coventry: it is expected that one studentship will be allocated to each. The overall research programme involves academics from the universities of Aston, Leicester and the Open University as well as Warwick.
New report on Northern Ireland’s higher education students published
A new report using Futuretrack data, written by Gaby Atfield and Professor Kate Purcell, has been published by DELNI. The report focuses on students from Northern Ireland studying at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Northern Ireland, students from Northern Ireland studying at HEIs in Great Britain and students from Great Britain studying in Northern Ireland. Findings suggest that Northern Ireland students as a group were happy with the higher education choices they had made. However, the students in the Futuretrack cohort were graduating at a time of recession, and Northern Ireland students were particularly concerned about whether they would see a return on their investment.
BIS Report on Technical Apprenticeships
A report on the demand for and supply of technical apprenticeships was published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills on 31st March 2014. The report, entitled Research into the need for and capacity to provide technical apprenticeships in England
, was co-authored by Terence Hogarth and Lynn Gambin from IER and researchers from Sheffield Hallam University.
The report suggests that there is a lean system of skills supply in place for technician-type skills. Supply and demand are currently finely balanced with employers expressing concern that that any marked increase in demand, which may arise as a consequence of the economic recovery and the commissioning of major infrastructure projects, may result in the emergence of skills shortages.
The study involved interviews with employers, training providers and various stakeholders across England and considers a number of industrial sectors where technical apprenticeships comprise an important part of skills development.

Vacancy for IER Research Fellow
Warwick Institute for Employment Research seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the ESRC-funded project ‘Precarious Pathways of Young People into Employment’: an interdisciplinary study focused on the Midlands, to work as part of a team of researchers located at the Universities of Warwick, Aston, Leicester and the Open University.
This is a 3-year fixed-term post, starting from June 2014.
