IER Newsletter - April 2019 Futuretrack Stage 5 survey is live An online survey catching up with UK graduates almost ten years after their graduation to gather data on their working lives has just launched. The survey is a key part of the fieldwork for the fifth wave of the Futuretrack longitudinal study into the careers of UK graduates. The unique Futuretrack study is run by IER and funded by the Nuffield Foundation. Futuretrack follows a large sample of students who applied to university in 2005/2006 and aims to gather detailed insights into the kinds of jobs graduates are doing in the longer-term, how they got them, whether higher education has contributed to social mobility. IER team visits India for project launch workshop Clare Lyonette, Gaby Atfield and Sudipa Sarkar will visit India for the first of a series of workshops as part of the ESRC Global Challenges Research Fund project 'Inequalities and skills acquisition in young people: Identification of factors affecting successful outcomes in the DDU-GKY Indian skills programme for unemployed young people’. The IER team will be joined by Bhaskar Chakravorty, an IER PhD student and research assistant, and Himadri Sinha, co-investigator on the project, based at Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS). During the first workshop visit, the IER team will deliver workshops to Master's students at XISS on quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as engaging with key local stakeholders. Seminar on internships and graduate outcomes Daria Luchinskaya has been invited to give a seminar on how internships affect graduate outcomes at the Centre for Global Higher Education at UCL on 2nd of May 2019. The paper, 'Unequal opportunities: the role of internships in graduates’ labour market transitions in the UK and Italy', is based on work with Charikleia Tzanakou, Luca Cattani and Giulio Pedrini (University of Bologna), and is a continuation of the researchers' collaboration. Jenny Bimrose at NICEC conference, 'The changing nature, and integration of LMI into career practice' Jenny Bimrose presented at the NICEC international conference (Changing boundaries: career, identity, and self. An international conference on research, practice and policy in career development) on 16th April, 2019 on LMI for All. The presentation examined the integration of labour market information (LMI) with information communications technology (ICT) as a case study of the changing professional identity of career practitioners. Drawing on two major research studies, this workshop focused on the influences of the changing nature, and integration of LMI into career practice through the use of ICT, on the professional identity transformation of career practitioners.
