John Hammersley (MPhys Mathematics and Physics, 2004)
Founder, Overleaf
I've always been fascinated by science, space, and technology, and the optimism it brings, inspired in large part by the moon landings -- which happened to coincide with my sister's birthday -- the space shuttle programme of my childhood, and continuing today with the amazing progress of SpaceX and reusable rockets. After graduating from Warwick, I undertook a PhD in Mathematical Physics at Durham University in 2008, and went on to help launch the world’s first driverless taxi system now operating at London’s Heathrow Airport.
I'm probably best known as one of the founders of Overleaf, the online collaborative writing platform which I led as CEO for almost a decade and which has over 16M users worldwide. I'm now championing researcher and community engagement at Digital Science, building technology which supports innovative people in changing the world for the better. I also mentor in the Bethnal Green Ventures start-up accelerator in London, am a dad to two rapidly-growing daughters, and in my spare time like to dance West Coast Swing!
