This is the report of a research project conducted on behalf of Eurofound (the Eurpean Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions) by a group of researchers from Cardiff, City and Warwick Universities. The project analysed data from the second European Quality of Life Survey for 10 countries in western Europe, in which the sample sizes from minority ethnic and migrant groups were sufficiently large. The report focuses on differences between neighbourhoods according to their level of ethnic diversity and covers the topics of deprivation, housing conditions, social exclusion and general well-beiong and also explores the relationship between ethnic diversity and inter-ethnic tension. The report contrasts all ten countries studies and makes extensive use of logistic regression in order to summarise the data. Neighbourhoods which are more diverse tend to be located in cities, and are found to have more youthful populations, higher levels of deprivation, poorer housing conditions (and relatively higher housing costs) and poorer levels of quality of life and social inclusion.

Dr Ilias Livanos will be presenting with Lefteris Kretsos at the forthcoming Industrial Relations in Europe conference to be held at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Barcelona (1-2 September). They will present research on ‘Identifying Factors Affecting Precarious Forms of Employment among Young People in Europe: A Quantitative Study’.

Places are still available at a Symposium, taking place at Warwick on 29 September 2011. This invitation only event will focus on an international comparison of approaches to labour market assessment and skills forecasting, with inputs from those with hands-on experience, and who can speak authoritatively (and critically) about the strengths and weakness of the various approaches adopted across the world, and the lessons they have learned over the past 20 years. The competition for Chancellor's Scholarships (formerly WPRS) for entry in October 2012 has now opened. The Graduate School expects to award around 45 Chancellor's Scholarships. Awards made for entry in October 2012 may include payment of fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance grant in line with the UK Research Council stipend (£13,590 for full-time award holders in 2011-12).

Bernard Casey has been invited to speak on the challenges of workforce ageing at the HRSDC Knowledge Talks Series on 18 August. HRSDC is the Canadian Federal Ministry for Human Resources and Skills Development. David McGovern, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, will be chairing the session. The event is part of HRSDC's efforts to create space for continuous policy conversation on key government and departmental priorities.
