Employers need to be able to recruit the right talent for their businesses, so that they can use employee potential efficiently. The government’s ‘Careers guidance action plan’ recommended that employers should work with the National Careers Service to achieve these ambitions. Recently published research, led by Professor Jenny Bimrose at the Institute for Employment Research, examined the need for greater levels of employers to work with schools, and the role of National Careers Service in fulfilling this need. One conclusion suggests that employer links not only inspire, inform and advise students about particular occupations and sectors, but also enhance the provision of careers and work-related education in the curriculum. Professor Chris Warhurst is the Director of the Institute for Employment Research. He said: "The good news from today’s figures is that unemployment continues to fall and more people are in work. In fact Christmas present looks good. Almost half a million jobs have been created in the UK this year. The employment rate has risen to 73%, continuing an upward trend that started in 2011. Unemployment has fallen to 6%, this time the continuation of a downward trend. And the UK’s unemployment rate is far lower than the EU average (6% vs 10%). IER bakers, Sally Wright, Charoula Tzanakou and Sally-Anne Barnes, won first prize with the Warwick Medical School in the Warwick interdepartmental baking competition. The IER bakers baked and decorated a Poppy remembrance cake inspired by the Tower of London Remembers installation.

Dr Charoula Tzanakou has been selected to participate in the workshop Strengthening UK-Colombia Research & Innovation Cooperation (UK-Colombia RICO): The Role of Foresight and Horizon Scanning, funded by the British Council and taking place in Cali, Colombia on 26-28 November 2014. Dr Tzanakou will contribute to science and technology policy themes drawing on her doctoral and postdoc research on human resources in science and technology, as well as her participation in European Commission funded projects on higher education and European Research Area.
