Visual guide to icons in Moodle

This guide details the different activities, resources and editing features that are available in Moodle.

Users with editing rights (Manager, Course Leader, Editing Teacher) can add, edit and delete activities and resources in a Moodle space. Please also see our step-by-step guide on how to edit a Moodle space.


Assignment Assignment - An activity used to submit files for marking. Can be integrated with Turnitin for plagiarism detection.

Attendance - An activity used to take attendance during sessions.

Blog - An activity where one or more people can contribute to creating content in a specific format.

Chat Chat - An asynchronous chat tool activity that can be used for group work.

Checklist - An activity that allows a teacher to create a list, such as for tasks, for students to work through.

Choice Choice - An activity that allows to ask module participants a single multiple-choice question. Can be used to allow participants to select a project or direction for the course, stimulate thinking about a topic or quickly test participants' understanding. Results may be published with associated participant names or anonymously.

Database Database - An activity which allows students and editors to input and store searchable data.

External Tool External Tool - An activity that links to an external source of learning resources and activities, such as a website.

Feedback Feedback - An activity that enables the creation of custom surveys to collect feedback. A variety of question types are available. Responses may be anonymous and can be shared with all participants. Do not use this activity for student module feedbackLink opens in a new window.

Forum Forum - An asynchronous activity that can be used for moderated and unmoderated group discussion.

Glossary Glossary - A list of definitions that can be added to by student or editor.

Group Choice icon Group Choice - Allows students to select one or more groups they wish to be a member of in a course.

H5P - This activity enables the creation of a variety of interactive content for formative assessment. User interaction and scores can be tracked in the Moodle Gradeboook. H5P must not be used for exams or similar.

Lesson Lesson - An activity for creating flexible learning paths using a series of HTML pages and choices.

Questionnaire Questionnaire - An activity which allows you to gather data by surveying Moodle space participants.

Quiz Quiz - An online quiz activity that can automatically provide marks and feedback to participants.

Scheduler - This activity allows to schedule appointments with individual or several students. The outcome of the appointment can be recorded within the activity.

SCORM SCORM package - allows uploading of a standard package of interactive content.

Survey Survey - An activity that can use COLLES and ATTLS survey instrumentsLink opens in a new window to assess and stimulate learning.

OU Wiki Icon Wiki - A series of web pages that can be edited by participants and automatically links entries.

Workshop Workshop - An activity that allows uploading of assignments and facilitates peer and self-assessment.


Book Book - A multi-page resource with a book-like format that you can page through or navigate using a table of contents.

File File - A resource where you can upload a file to your Moodle space.

Folder Folder - A resource which can display multiple files of the same or different formats.

IMS IMS content package - allows uploading of a standard package of (predominantly static) content.

Label Label - A versatile 'spacer' that can be used with images, text and multimedia within sections.

Lightbox Gallery - This resources can host a collection of images. If enabled, users can leave comments on the gallery.

Page Page - A link to a cross-platform accessible page which can contain text, images, audio and video.

Reading listLink opens in a new window - This resource allows to link to the module literature in Talis Aspire.

URL URL - Link to an external website.

Editing and Navigation

The availability of these icons is depending on your user role in Moodle. Not all of these icons might be available to you. If you think you should have access to more editing features, please contact your department's academic technologist or

Use the pencil icon to edit for titles and descriptions.

Use the four-headed arrow icon to drag and drop topics, activities, resources, and blocks.

Use the cog icon to open the action menu. Update or edit content and settings of entire Moodle spaces or elements within them.

/ Use the eye visibility icons to show or hide items.

/ Use the arrow icon(s) to move an activity or resource to the right or left i.e. indent or outdent.

Use the copy icon to copy and paste, i.e. duplicate, an activity or resource.

Use the user icon to assign roles to an activity, e.g. to allow non-editors to make changes to a specific item.

Use the bin icon to delete an item.

Hover over the question mark icon for more information, i.e. for contextual help.
