TERM 1

Week 1. Induction for the whole module

Week 2. Introduction to IT401 writing (please see PPT presentation). Preliminary activity on 'testo informativo': file.

Homework for next week:
Complete the exercises A and B of the handout about the different kinds of titles for a newspaper article (please refer to the theoretical framework described here)

Week 3. Testo informativo 1

  • Read the article 'Fuga di cervelli, un male antico'. Underline key words, figures of speech and journalist's interventions. Reflect on the structure in paragraphs, signposts, verbal tenses, lead (‘attacco’) and conclusion (‘chiusura’).
  • What the 'occhiello' and the 'sommario' are and why they are important (see p. 2 of this photocopy).
  • Analysis of the structure of ‘Occhielli, titoli e sommari tratti da quotidiani’ (see file 1 and file 2).
  • The 5-W journalistic system (Who, What, Where, When, Why + How) and some theoretical insights about the structure of ‘testi informativi’.

Homework for next week:
- Answer the questions E, G, H of file 2 referring to file 1 (do a little bit of research to answer question G).
- Revise carefully the text of the article ‘Fuga di cervelli, un male antico’;
- Answer the following questions concerning the article:

Come comincia l'articolo? Quali sono gli elementi che vengono posti in evidenza nelle prime frasi, ossia nell'attacco ('lead')?
Come è strutturato l'articolo? Qual è la divisione in paragrafi? Ci sono parole di 'signposting'?
Come sviluppa la sua tesi l'autore?
Quali sono le parole-chiave adoperate?
Ci sono numerosi esempi?
Ci sono citazioni tratte da fonti specifiche?
Si può distinguere facilmente l'opinione del giornalista dalle opinioni altrui che vengono riportate? Il giornalista prende direttamente la parola?

- In this file you will find two sets of ‘attacchi’ and two lists of questions referring to each set respectively. Please answer all of the questions.

Week 4. Testo informativo 2

ESSAY DEADLINE: Wednesday 2nd November, h 16. Please put your assignment in the plastic tray outside my office (H 4.19, 4th floor of the Humanities building). If your assignment is more than one-page long, staple ALL the pages together!

ESSAY QUESTION:
Write an ‘articolo di giornale informativo’ of 800 words on the topic ‘fuga dei cervelli’ . Your article should include titolo, occhiello and sommario. For more ideas you could use the dossier about the 'fuga dei cervelli' (see above).

Homework:
- ‘Descrivi un luogo o un oggetto presentandolo da diversi punti di vista’ (question n. 4 of the ‘Capo Palinuro’ handout). Write 100 words at least.
- Choose the right option among the ones provided in the text ‘Un viaggio in costiera amalfitana: esercizio sul lessico del turismo’
- Read the handout ‘Itinerario a piedi: Lecce’ and underline all the phrases, nouns, adjectives, and verbs that make you think that the author is trying to ‘persuade’ you that this place is beautiful.
- Read carefully the passage from the book ‘Venezia è un pesce’ by Tiziano Scarpa.
- In order to understand better what is a ‘TESTO PERSUASIVO’, read this chapter.

Remember that next week there will NOT be lesson on Tuesday, I will see you on Thursday instead. I will see:

- Comment in class on the persuasive elements (adjectives, phrases, etc.) of the text 'Itinerario a piedi: Lecce' you studied as homework.

ESSAY QUESTION:
Scrivi un itinerario artistico-culturale di una città/regione a tua scelta (può trattarsi del luogo dove abiti o dove abita la tua famiglia; di un luogo che hai visitato in vacanza o in gita scolastica; o semplicemente della tua città preferita). Evidenziane le caratteristiche più positive, in modo che chi legga il tuo testo sia invogliato a visitarlo (scrivi almeno 800 parole). You can also think of a literary guide of a city of your choice finding a metaphor which represents it (following the example of 'Venezia è un pesce' by Tiziano Scarpa). - Feedback about the ‘Articolo di giornale informativo sulla Fuga dei cervelli’ (English-Italian false friends, noun-adjective agreement; how to talk about numbers, percentages, statistics, etc.)

- Useful handouts about Connective Words (connettivi): please use them EVERY TIME you write an essay in Italian so that by the end of the year you will know by heart all the connective words and you will be able to use them perfectly on the day of the exam!!!

Homework:

- Read carefully Saviano’s text and complete the exercise that we started in class (see the last slide of the Power Point presentation about ‘La situazione delle carceri’).

- Find a 'lettera aperta a un quotidiano' (the topic is of your choice). Copy it in a Word file - so that we can project it during the next lesson - and highlight structures, typology of sentences, formal or informal vocabulary (point out examples for each category to support your opinion). You can email the file to me or bring it on a usb, as you prefer. NB: Don’t forget to indicate the date the ‘lettera’ was published, the name of the newspaper and the url of the website.

- Learn the keywords highlighted in blue in my PowerPoint presentation about 'La situazione delle carceri'.

Next essay deadline: Wednesday 30th November, h 16. As always, please put your assignment in the plastic tray outside my office (H 4.19, 4th floor of the Humanities building). If your assignment is more than one-page long, staple ALL the pages together! Please select the DOUBLE line-spacing when choosing the layout of your essay. This will allow me enough space for my corrections.

ESSAY QUESTION:

Scrivi una lettera aperta a un quotidiano che abbia come argomento la situazione delle carceri in Italia (1000 words).

You can use the file ‘How to write a lettera aperta’ with regard to the structure of the 'lettera aperta' and the file Dossier sulle carceri for extra-readings about this topic. NB: the texts that you will find in the ‘Dossier sulle carceri’ are NOT ‘lettera aperte’; those are newspaper articles that are meant to help you to deepen your understanding of the topic; hence, you have to consider the articles of the dossier for their content, and not for their structure.

Week 8.

- Feedback in class about the ‘Guida turistica’ essay.

- Saviano's 'lettera aperta': correction in class of the howework (see the last slide of the Power Point presentation about ‘La situazione delle carceri’).

- Comment on the structure of Saviano's text ('attacco', syntax, structure and length of paragraphs, 'chiusura', 'frasi a effetto', 'frasi nominali', etc.).

- Comment on the handout: ‘How to write a lettera aperta’ (to download this document, please see above, week 7)

- Handout: 'TEORIA SUL TESTO ESPRESSIVO-EMOTIVO'

- Comment in class about the 'Lettere aperte' that you found and sent me.

Homework:

- Please carry out a detailed analysis of this lettera aperta: Lettera aperta al Direttore de 'Il Giornale' Sallusti. Be prepared to comment in class about: the 'attacco'; the aim and the thesis propounded; the techniques that are employed to enhance readership engagement; type of conclusion; linguistic register (high, average/colloquial, low) of the vocabulary employed.

Don't forget that the next essay deadline is Wednesday 30th November (please see above - in the 'Week 7' section - the Essay question and more details).

Week 9.

- Comment on the structure of the open letter to Sallusti, director of ‘Il Giornale’.

2. Example of argumentative essay: ‘Con gli OGM risolveremo il problema della fame nel mondo?’

Homework:
- Identify the underlying structure of the short essay ‘Con gli OGM risolveremo il problema della fame nel mondo?’ (see above) - Individuate: l’introduzione del TEMA (il problema, l’oggetto del discorso); la presentazione della TESI e dell’ANTITESI; l’ARGOMENTAZIONE (può trattarsi di una sintesi oppure di una confutazione – sia della tesi che dell’antitesi –); la conclusione e la rienfatizzazione della presa di posizione dell’autore del saggio.
- Answer the questions no. 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the handout 'Interrogare il dossier e individuare una tesi’ about the OGM'
- Complete the exercises of this handout about connectives.

Week 10.

3. Correction in plenum of some of the exercises about the connectives.

Christmas break homework:

- Choose a book from this list and read it over the Christmas holidays. This will be very useful in Term 2 when we will be tackling the review ('recensione') and you will be requested to write a review about an Italian book.

- The next essay deadline is Wednesday 11th January, 4pm (Week 1, Term 2). The essay question is the following:

Scrivi un testo argomentativo di almeno 1000 parole riguardante gli OGM (Organismi Geneticamente Modificati). Serviti degli handouts che hai ricevuto in classe; inoltre, conduci delle ricerche autonome sull'argomento degli OGM e includi i risultati delle tue ricerche all'interno del tuo testo argomentativo.

- PowerPoint presentation: Come scrivere una lettera motivazionale + Consigli su come affrontare un colloquio di lavoro in italiano (siti utili)
- Un esempio di lettera motivazionale: lavorare come addetto/a all’ufficio stampa. Leggi la lettera, correggi gli errori di grammatica e rifletti sulla struttura (introduzione + secondo paragrafo, in cui vengono illustrate le esperienze lavorative e perché sono rilevanti ai fini della candidatura + conclusione)
Homework for week 3:
- Un altro esempio di lettera motivazionale (servizi per l’infanzia): leggi e rispondi alle domande.
- Leggi questo annuncio di lavoro per un posto di ricercatore di lingua e letteratura italiana e le lettere motivazionali di due candidati che hanno presentato domanda. Se tu fossi il datore di lavoro, a quale dei due candidati daresti il posto di lavoro e perché? Analizza la struttura delle due lettere e giustifica la tua scelta.
- Se non li avete già fatti, completate gli esercizi sulla punteggiatura della scorsa settimana; ne correggeremo una parte in classe.

NEXT ESSAY DEADLINE: Wednesday 25th January
Scrivi una lettera motivazionale (di circa 1000 parole) per un annuncio di lavoro a tua scelta. Puoi inventarlo; se, invece, si tratta di un annuncio reale, allegalo alla lettera motivazionale, cosicché io possa leggerlo e verificare se nella tua lettera ti sia mantenuto/a coerente con le richieste poste nell’annuncio.
Week 3.

- Discussion in class about the two cover letters for a position as a University researcher.
