Add files and images to Mahara

Mahara has a file storage area that allows you to upload documents, images and other files for reuse on your pages.

There is up to 1Gb of storage available but we recommend that videos are stored on our streaming service eStream.warwick.ac.uk and added as external media so as to save space for other files and images. For more information on eStream, please browse our eStream guides. Alternatively, upload them to MS Stream and link to them directly.

In this guide:

Upload a file

  1. Click on the main menu icon, expand the Create section, and select Files.

  2. Click to check the "Yes: The file I am attempting to upload is my own ... " checkbox. You should not upload files that you do not have permission to use.
  3. Click on Choose files and browse to the files on your local device or drag and drop files onto the grey box to upload
  4. When the file(s) have uploaded, click on the pencil icon to edit the details of the file.
  5. Change the name to something recognisable, give it a description if you think this will be useful - and we strongly recommend that you add Tags (these are really useful for finding and organising artefacts, and creating pages).

Organise files into folders

  1. Click on the main menu icon, expand the Create section, and select Files.
  2. First, create your folder - type the name of the folder into the box underneath the grey file upload block, and click Create folder.
  3. Add files to folders - hover over a file and the move icon will appear; click, hold and drag files onto the folder. It will take a couple of seconds to refresh each time you add a file to a folder.
  4. Click on the folder name to view the files it contains.

You can drag and drop folders into another folder. We recommend that you add Tags to each folder you create to make it easier to find them and add them to pages.

Add a file to a page

Files are added to pages so that they can be downloaded.

  1. Turn on editing on a page using the pencil  edit icon at the top right.
  2. Click and drag the drag to add a block icon from the top right-hand side of the page to the appropriate location on the page. Existing blocks will move to make space.
  3. A window will fly in from the right. Click on the File(s) to download block in the list.
  4. Edit the block title if required.
  5. Click on the Files drop-down to select one or more files you have already uploaded, or to add a new file directly (this will be stored in the Files section as above).
  6. Click on the tick icon to the right of the file(s) you want to add.
  7. Click Save and the file(s) you have chosen will appear on the page as a list in the File(s) to download block.

Add a folder to a page

Folders are added to pages so that their contents are organised and can be downloaded as a zip file or individually.

  1. Turn on editing on a page using the pencil  edit icon at the top right.
  2. Click and drag the drag to add a block icon from the top right-hand side of the page to the appropriate location on the page. Existing blocks will move to make space.

  6. Click on the tick icon to the right of the folder(s) you want to add.
  7. Select whether the files inside the folder are listed in ascending or descending order.
  8. Click Save and the folder(s) you have chosen will appear on the page as a list.

Add an image to a page

Images are displayed on the page and can be used as part of the content or as a 'look and feel' element breaking up the page.

  1. Turn on editing on a page using the pencil  edit icon at the top right.
  2. Click and drag the drag to add a block icon from the top right-hand side of the page to the appropriate location on the page. Existing blocks will move to make space.
