Seminars
WCPM hosts regular seminars where we invite speakers working both in fundamental methodology and on applications of predictive modelling and UQ.
These seminars have been running since October 2016 and take place on Mondays at 1pm, with a focus on all aspects of research involving significant computation. Each seminar is accessible through Teams, and the majority of seminars are held in person in D2.02 or A205B. Please see details of each seminar to confirm the format.
If you would like to be kept informed of upcoming seminars, please do sign up here or send an email to wcpm-seminar-join at listserv dot csv dot warwick dot ac dot uk.
Details of past presentations are below.
Upcoming Seminars
John Huber (Oxford Engineering Science)
Phase field methods for simulating ferroelectrics and other materials
John Huber, University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science.
Ananya Renuka Balakrishna, University of Minnesota, Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics.
Microstructure evolution features prominently in chemical reactions, phase transformations, and biological growth. In materials, this evolution is driven by electro-chemical, mechanical and thermal loads. The microstructure formed alters the physical properties of materials. We develop and apply mathematical models (phase-field models) to investigate how microstructures evolve, and how we can engineer these patterns to control material properties. In this talk, we will discuss phase-field modeling of microstructures in two material systems: ferroelectrics and lithium battery electrodes. First, we will present how microstructural engineering of ferroelectric materials generate actuation strains that are greater than piezoceramics in the market by over two-fold. We will also demonstrate why ferroelectric vortex microstructures, with potential applications in memory devices, are elusive in experiments. Our research identifies the scale and surface conditions where vortex patterns can be found as minimum energy states. Second, we will introduce the recent work on introducing crystallographic texture to predict microstructures in electrodes. We will discuss our key finding that was not captured by earlier phase-field methods, which is that charging/discharging a battery accelerates grain growth in electrodes. This research suggests battery cycling as an additional factor that contributes to the mechanical degradation of electrodes. Overall, the phase-field models provide a theoretical framework, and motivate further research, to engineer a new generation of materials with enhanced properties and extended lifespans.
